While temptation to minimise time spent on close reading - interpretation of language choices - is understandable given time constraints, it is important in consolidating students’ understandings and developing reading comprehension (Fang, 2016; Snow & Connor, 2016) – essential literacy foundations for further analysis a text (Harvard).

This approach is especially beneficial for students who struggle to read novels on their own at home and who need literacy support in the classroom to develop comprehension.

The biggest struggle of my ESE kids (elementary level) is that of being aware of the meaning of what they are reading.

Many have processing problems and their disabilities negatively impact their reading comprehension.

There are two levels to reading comprehension: shallow and deep processing.

Shallow processing involves structural and phonetic recognition, while deep processing is more concerned with semantic understanding, when the brain encodes word meaning and relates it to similar words.
