Using random assignment means that each participant has the same chance of being assigned to any of these groups.So what type of procedures might psychologists utilize for random assignment?
For example, in a psychology experiment, participants might be assigned to either a control group or an experimental group.
Some experiments might only have one experimental group while others may have several treatment variations.
Random selection means to create your study sample randomly, by chance.
Random selection results in a representative sample; you can make generalizations and predictions about a population’s behavior based on your sample as long as you have used a probability sampling method.
Example of random assignment: you have a study group of 50 people and you write their names on equal size balls.
You then place the balls into an urn and mix them well (this is a classic ball and urn experiment).
Random assignment would have shown that this connection did not exist, any other assignment could have left the bias intact.
Random assignment ensures that participants in a cause and effect study are unbiased as it prevents people’s history from causing an extraneous variable within the experiment.
So we can see just how difficult it is to use random assignment in some cases, yet in others experiments wherein the participants past cannot make a large impact, I consider it to be the best assignment type available.
