The first and most important step in any research is to identify and delineate the research problem: that is, what the researcher wants to solve and what questions he/she wishes to answer.A research problem may be defined as an area of concern, a gap in the existing knowledge, or a deviation in the norm or standard that points to the need for further understanding and investigation.
Although many problems turn out to have several solutions (the means to close the gap or correct the deviation), difficulties arise where such means are either not obvious or are not immediately available.
This then necessitates some research to reach a viable solution.
For example: The point is to keep drilling down through this until the real reason is revealed.
This can get uncomfortable for many managers because often they feel too busy to evaluate the “why” of doing certain processes.
Part B (The reality): Describes a condition that prevents the goal, state, or value in Part A from being achieved or realized at this time; explains how the current situation falls short of the goal or ideal.
Part A: According to the XY university mission statement, the university seeks to provide students with a safe, healthy learning environment.A statement of problem need not be long and elaborate: one page is more than enough for a good statement of problem. What are the key characteristics of a statement of the problem? Each Monday the supervisors spend the entire day rounding up the reports, transferring the sales data into a spreadsheet, and compiling another report to send to upper management. You might even make a case that upper management is affected because as long as managers are compiling reports, they are not closing business. The sales team is writing personal reports, managers are trying to compile results and report them up, and senior managers are making decisions based on these reports.Upper Management wants to reduce the amount of time it takes to compile these reports to free the sales managers up to close more business. The amount of time used to compile these reports seems excessive, particularly for the managers. Where does the problem occur: Mainly at headquarters. Manager productivity is less than optimal, data could be suspect, and there is no central source of information.is used in research work as a claim that outlines the problem addressed by a study. The statement of the problem briefly addresses the question: What is the problem that the research will address? The ultimate goal of a statement of the problem is to transform a generalized problem (something that bothers you; a perceived lack) into a targeted, well-defined problem; one that can be resolved through focused research and careful decision-making.On page 415, under Data Analysis, the reference is to use a problem statement as part of a root cause analysis.“It can be used to identify threats by starting with a problem statement…” All well and good – but not much help in developing a problem statement. It’s important to get this right so the team knows where to focus attention. In the parenthesis replace the suggestions your own words to express your company’s situation. After the problem statement is created and approved, it’s time to move on to possible solutions.
